Singer model 27 - The sphinx - 1894

Although this machine is 16 years younger than my Mothers Sphinx below it appears to have less sewing completed on it!  The decals are in very nice condition and it has sat lovingly in Sue's home for 20 years covered as a decorative piece of furniture.  We are grateful to have this Sphinx in our collection as my Mothers is in my home and not in the museum!

The cabinet has the early "coffin top" as opposed to my Mothers which has the flip cover.  Unfortunately someone used shallac to finish the wood on this machine.  It is shiny however not the original wood of the 1894 period.

Although you cannot see it well note the treadle peddle has now moved up to full size so it fits my two feet quite amply.

Singer Model 27 - "The Sphinx" - 1910

This was my Mothers machine.  It is a treadle with a vibrating shuttle, known by the two plate openings both front and back.  She was well used!

In this photo you can see the "bullet" shuttle that carries the bobbin.
